Can You Drink Protein Shakes While Intermittent Fasting?

Can you drink protein shakes while intermittent fasting or not? Let’s SCOOP up the answers and SHAKE out the real truth?

Can You Drink Protein Shakes While Intermittent Fasting?

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent Fasting is an eating pattern that focuses on WHEN you eat, not WHAT you eat. Intermittent fasting alternates between periods of eating and not eating. In recent years it’s become super popular because it’s pretty flexible and can be an easy way for people to fit it into their busy lifestyles. Additionally, there are many benefits of intermittent fasting. It can help with accelerated weight loss and can be a convenient way to meet your overall health goals.

Why is Protein Important While Intermittent Fasting?

Protein is like the body’s building blocks, and it plays a crucial role in intermittent fasting. During intermittent fasting, you have limited eating windows, making it essential to make every meal count in terms of nutrition. Getting enough protein is vital for several reasons.

Firstly, it aids with digestive issues. It promotes a feeling of fullness, reducing the likelihood of overeating during your eating window. Secondly, protein aids in muscle growth and muscle tissue preservation. This ensures that your body primarily burns fat for energy, leading to more fat loss.

Additionally, protein can help regulate blood sugar levels. And, this can be particularly beneficial for individuals with insulin sensitivity issues.

Clearly, the question isn’t whether including protein in your intermittent fasting routine is beneficial or not. The real question is: Will protein shakes break a fast and interrupt the fasted state if I drink them during my fasting window?

To answer this burning question, we must first understand what exactly breaks a fast!

What Breaks a Fast?

Technically, fasting means refraining from having any kind of food. As a result, “Any amount of calories will break a fast,” says Scott Keatley, RD, of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy.

In other words, if you eat or drink anything that provides your body with energy, like food, sugary drinks, or anything containing calories, it breaks the fast.

However, an intermittent fast can be broken in several ways other than just consuming calories:

  1. Protein Intake: Even if the food or drink is low in calories, a significant intake or too many grams of protein can potentially break the fast.
  2. Stimulating Digestion: Consuming foods that stimulate the digestive system (even if they have minimal or zero calories) can signal your body to switch from fasting to fed mode.
  3. Blood Sugar Spikes: Certain foods or drinks, even those low in calories, can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels. This can trigger an insulin response and break the fast. This is especially true for high-glycemic foods and sugary drinks.
  4. Impact on Gut Microbiome: Some artificial ingredients, artificial sweeteners or additives in foods or drinks may affect the gut microbiome. This may potentially disrupt the fasting state.
  5. Medications and Supplements: Some medications or supplements may contain ingredients that affect insulin levels or have a metabolic impact, potentially breaking the fast.
6 Things that Break a Fast!

So, Do Protein Shakes Break a Fast or Not?

Yes, protein meal replacement shakes will definitely break your intermittent fast. Sipping a protein shake introduces calories into your system. These calories are usually from the protein powder or the added ingredients used to make them. When you consume calories, even from protein, it sends a signal to your body to stimulate digestion and insulin releases, which interrupts the fasting process.

During intermittent fasting, the idea is to keep your calorie intake very low or at zero during the fasting period. So anything with calories, like protein shakes, can break the fasted state and could potentially keep you from reaching your ultimate health and weight loss goals.

When is the Best Time To Drink Protein Shakes While Intermittent Fasting?

If you want to refuel and boost your energy levels by taking a protein shake break, it’s best to do so during your eating window.

Many people who fast, prefer to have their protein shake as a post-workout snack or part of a balanced meal within their feeding window. This is a great way, to maximize the benefits of both intermittent fasting and protein intake, supporting muscle maintenance, and feeling satisfied throughout your eating windows and periods of fasting.

For the best results, it’s a good idea to strictly stick to black coffee, plain water, unflavored mineral water and green and black tea during your fasting period.
